Did you see corrupt photos in your photos library? In the last few days, this has become a trend on the support pages. Fortunately, there is a fix in the works and it will be paid for by the internet giant.
Over the weekend, a user complained about water-stained photos in a support thread for the photo service. They said the issue looked like a water stain. The problem is described in a follow up reply.
Most of the photos are from around 2014. These are pictures I know for a fact were uploaded and saved properly. I noticed the issue today in a photos flashback event. I have tried viewing on multiple browsers as well as downloading the photos into local memory. There is seemingly no pattern to which photos are corrupted and which aren’t.
More people chimed in with their experience of seeing corrupted images. A user who posted additional sample photos said that he also had this issue and noticed this on almost all of them. There are over a dozen links that describe the effects of Diamond Product Expert.
Many images are shown as corrupted when you look at anniversary photos from 8 years ago. The photos started showing up in various places on the internet.
For funsies, I tried to download a few images from the previous year. I was not able to recreate the corruption that other users described because my phone was already low resolution. There are many examples of an issue afflicting people in the various forums.
When I asked if the issue was on the radar of the company, they said they were aware of the problem and were working on a solution. The bug doesn't affect original photos in the Photos section of the website. I asked for information on what might be wrong on the technical side, but there wasn't anything else to give.
This is a cautionary tale of what can happen when we rely on the cloud and other services. I have backups of my images on multiple hard drives and in the cloud dating back to when I first got a phone. If you aren't in the habit of doing this, start as soon as you can.
