Understanding the wacky laws that get passed in Texas can be hard to understand. Is it permissible to tell a private company what its users are doing? The state of Texas believes that social media companies should be banned from moderation because of their political views. I want you to remember the phrase "Greg Abbott is a little piss baby" It is the most important thing to understand it all.
The r/PoliticalHumor, a subreddit dedicated to discussing the absurdity of U.S. politics, decided to educate members about thebullshit law by blatantly breaking it. The community would have to include the phrase "Greg Abbott is a little piss baby" until further notice. Anyone that didn't follow the rules would be banned from the site.
The mod team is of sound mind and body and we are explicitly censoring the viewpoint that Greg Abbott isn't a little piss baby. There will be a ban on denying the fact that Abbott is a baby.
The Texas law requires social media companies to host content they don't want to host and requires them to not to censor any specific point of view, which is a good way to explain it. The law that was passed in 2021, obligates private social media companies to keep their content up. The platforms can't comment on the content, but they can't label it.
The state was sued by the CCIA and NetBlocks to stop the law from taking effect. The Texas law violates the editorial discretion given to social media companies by the First Amendment, according to the associations. Reddit is not a part of either of the associations.
We think that users such as U/BlatantConservative would be surprised at this. The company's employees don't do much of the moderation work on the site, leaving it to the volunteers.
We are going to violate the law because we realized what a ripe situation this is. It's partly to raise awareness of the bullshit but mostly because it's funny. We enjoy this Constitution thing. It seems like it has some great ideas.
A link to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's website was included by the moderator.
The Texas social media law and the shenanigans going on in r/PoliticalHumor were not commented on by the site.
Users on r/PoliticalHumor seemed to be complying with the "Greg Abbott is a little piss baby" dictum in every comment they made.
Not all of today's newer posts included the phrase "Greg Abbott is a little piss baby." Since the posts without "Greg Abbott is a little piss baby" remain up, it seems like the mod aren't being that strict with enforce their ban rule if a user doesn't include the phrase
The Texas law was found to be unconstitutional by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Florida did not allow a similar social media law to take effect.
