The new feature is called "community labels." The feature may lay the groundwork for a more liberal moderation policy, according to the parent company.
The site's moderation tools have been made more specific by community labels. Drug and alcohol addiction, violence similar to what you might see in an age-restricted movie, and "sexual themes" including "erotic writing or imagery" are some of the topics that are being asked to be tagged. Adding any of them will make the post "mature" If you think something is sensitive, you can add a Mature label for it.
The new policies will be in line with the previous ones.
Once tagged, mature posts will either be hidden or blurred from view. All mature posts are hidden and the settings locked if you are under the age of 18. You have to manually change your settings if you want to view mature content.
In an update today, the CEO of Automattic said that community labels were a first step in a larger project. A full range of artists will be able to tag and protect their art. Community labels are our first step toward making sure that everything is appropriately tagged on Tumblr so that people aren’t exposed to content they don’t want to see or aren’t legally allowed to see. The response has been great so far, and I’m very excited that a fuller range of artists will be able to appropriately tag and protect their art and work. App store policies, particularly Apple’s, still mean that we need to take extra steps to make sure that anything tagged isn’t available to younger users and you need to explicitly opt-in to make sure it shows up. (That’s why we’re collecting birthdays now.) We haven’t updated the official content policies yet but hope to bring them more in line with our policies on WordPress.com soon.
The ban on adult content on the site sent a shock through the community. It's defined as more explicitly sexual than "mature content" which allows for written erotica and sexually suggestive material. The new community labels were seen by a number of people as a sign that the decision may be reversed.
The implications are not clear. WordPress.com allows mature content while still banning visual depictions of sexually explicit acts, but Mullenweg didn't specify how it could be duplicated on the other side of the internet. According to the announcement post, the new feature doesn't change our content policies, but they are still banned. The Verge was referred to by Automattic.
It can't be a place for porn on the site.
In March, he said he wanted to open the site's rules up a bit. He also said that artists should be given more freedom on the site. "If you look at our other products, we have policies that allow a lot more than what's currently allowed." The statues of David and The Birth of Venus have been allowed because of the policies that have evolved. It could be taken down right now, or it could be taken down in the future. It is necessary for the app to remain on the app store for it to be compatible. Anything tagged with a long list of words, including "girl" and "selfie", was locked down on the mobile platform. People were able to opt into viewing those posts.
Mullenweg said that more permissive moderation could be compatible with Apple's guidelines, and that seems to be what the site is attempting to add this week.
