Brooklyn Nets coach Steve Nash wants to make it clear that his relationship with Kevin Durant is good going into the 2022-23 season.
The statement comes after a tumultuous summer for the organization in which KD asked for a trade and Sean Marks was fired.
Nash said after the Nets' first official practice of the season that they are fine. We're doing well." It's been the same since we spoke. I've had a relationship with Kevin. I like the man. Some families have problems. It is behind us and we had a moment. This is what happens. It happens in the league.
We all felt like we couldn't overcome the adversity that we went through last year. When you expect to win, you lose perspective, but we were able to talk about what we can improve on from last year. Also, keep an eye on the situation. We went through a lot of things.
Reports that the star asked for Nash to be fired were false.
Nash didn't think that was 100 percent. There was more than one thing. There were a lot of factors that went into it. There are a lot of things going on. There are a lot of things that aren't true. There are a lot of things that aren't accurate. You get pieces of truth. Things are not true. It's true. I don't get caught up in all that.
When the time is right, I'll hear it from Kevin. I'm going to talk to all of the people involved. You just do it step by step. You are not overreacting. We are calm and working on facts.
During an August meeting in Los Angeles, the air was cleared, according to Nash. Marks said in a statement that the Nets wanted to "move forward" with Durant, who has four years left on his max contract.
Nash wouldn't say what he said to the player that helped clear the air.
"That's a private conversation, so I won't get into it," Nash said. It was a chance for us to communicate. We got to the bottom of the situation and decided to move forward.
Over the summer, there was a lot of speculation about his team and his star player, but Nash said he didn't care.
Nash said that he didn't mind because he knew Kevin as long as he had. Being a competitor involves that. I wasn't overly worried and I wasn't overly surprised. I thought we'd address this in time, and here we are, and we're looking forward.
There's something in this that we can all learn from. When things like that happen, the outside world makes a lot of it, from the inside we take it as an opportunity for growth.
Nash wanted to keep the focus on the future of the Nets.
We are in a good position to start the season, according to Nash. We've been through this regardless of how people talk about drama. I played in the league for a long time. I've seen it all and done it all. I don't think it's a big deal to me, maybe it impacts people on the street or in the media, but it's not a big deal to me.
We're fortunate to be in the gym working together again and excited because I always thought we'd have our moment, we'd discuss it and we'd choose a course. The energy has been great.
Nash believes that there isn't as much tension behind the scenes as there was at the end of last season, and that's why he believes they'll stay on the same page.
Nash said you don't start the year thinking you're going to go through the same amount of adversity. We faced too much to overcome last year because we had expectations and we had competitors.
Nash and the Nets are optimistic because Ben Simmons is a full participant after missing all of last season because of back surgery.
Nash saidBen looked great. Ben has been doing great. He's put in the time this summer and he's getting better every week so it looks like he's close to the player we envisioned and he's going to make a big impact.
