Mark Hertling, the former commander of the US Army in Europe, said that Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to draft hundreds of thousands of reserve soldiers is a recipe for slaughter.
The call-up is an outrage for many reasons. Sending new recruits, poorly trained Russians and untrained civilians into the country is a recipe for disaster. They won't be prepared for what will happen.
According to recent reports, people with no prior military experience are being forced to join the military, despite Putin's claim that only people with previous military experience will be called up.
Russian men may be sent to an illegal invasion for which they are not trained or prepared. It isn't warfare. Hertling said it was just more murder by its own citizens.
During his time as commander of the US Army in Europe, Hertling visited Russia and observed how the Russian army trained its conscripts.
Russian drill sergeants were "unprofessional and continuously harassed and hazed recruits," while marksmanship training was "geared toward familiarization with a weapon, but not qualification on it."
The soldiers were given a few rounds for practice. First aid training was rudimentary, map reading and land navigation wasn'texistent, and soldier initiative wasn't high. I can't say I'm surprised by any of the setbacks the Russian army has suffered. The Russians did not perform as well as they could have. This is reflected in the casualty counts. A lot of young Russians are leaving the country.
An intelligence update from Britain's Ministry of Defense said the same thing.
The lack of military trainers, and the haste with which Russia has started the mobilization, suggests that many of the drafted troops will deploy to the front line with minimal relevant preparation.
Thousands of Russian men are trying to leave their country as a result of Putin's decree. Satellite images show a traffic jam at the Russia-Georgia border, and a man shot and wounded a recruitment officer in Siberia.
There has been opposition to the decree.
When the decree has been violated, there are cases. Governors are trying to correct the situation.
