The first ever planetary defense technology demonstration mission slammed into the surface of a distant asteroid and went out in a blaze of glory. The asteroid Dimorphos was hit by the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) on September 26 at 7:14 PM.

Lindley Johnson, NASA's planetary defense officer, said that DART's success provides a significant addition to the essential tools we must have to protect Earth from a devastating impact by an asteroid. This shows that we are able to prevent disasters like this. A DART successor could provide what we need to save the day with enhanced capabilities to find the remaining hazardous asteroids.
