The Martha's Vineyard migrant stunt by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was more than just a political stunt.
The New York Times reported that members of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's team were upset by the scheme.
In the most recent effort by GOP leaders to highlight what they call a crisis at the US Southern border, a group of migrants from San Antonio, Texas were flown to Martha's Vineyard.
The governor's office said that the move was part of Florida's relocation program to bring illegal immigrants to sanctuary destinations. It was a move that was indebted to Abbott's own relocation program, which has bussed thousands of migrants to liberal locale in recent months.
Even though the migrants at the center of the controversy were gathered in San Antonio, DeSantis failed to inform anyone in Abbott's office of his latest plan.
Abbott's office didn't reply immediately.
Abbott praised the stunt in order to rally support for his state's immigration policy. It's DeSantis who has received the most attention from the situation.
It was a marked win for DeSantis in the rivalry with the other governor. Two of the country's conservative leaders are seeking reelection this fall.
With rumors of a presidential run gaining more traction with each passing day, many believe that DeSantis has his eye on a bigger office. According to recent polls, Republicans in both Florida and Texas are choosing to vote for Ron DeSantis over Donald Trump in a hypothetical 2024 presidential election.
Last week, the migrants involved in the Martha's Vineyard move filed a federal class action lawsuit, claiming that the incident was a "premeditated, fraudulent, and illegal scheme."
