There are more than a thousand palm tree species at risk of extinction.

Artificial intelligence was used to assess risks to the palm family.

The data shows how many palm species are under threat.

Millions of people are provided with food, drink and shelter by the plants of the palm family.

More than a thousand palm species may be threatened if we don't do all we can to protect them.

She said action was needed to conserve plants on the ground and to collect more data on them, which can't be done without the people who live in the regions where palms grow.

Coconut, palm oil, dates, rubber, oil and ropes are some of the staple crops of the palm tree.

Lesser known wild relatives of popular ornamental or commercially grown palms are at risk of extinction.

Wild plants are valuable to local people but could disappear before their full potential is known.

The team is investigating machine learning as a tool because official assessments of extinction risk are time consuming and expensive.

More than a thousand species of palms are at risk of extinction.

"With these predictions, we can help to prioritize the work that needs to be done in order to save the species that are most at risk," said Dr Steven Bachman.

The team has designated a number of countries as priority areas for palm preservation.

One of the most useful plant groups in the tropics is the palm, according to Dr. Cmara-Leret.

He said the study gave a better idea of how many palm species are in danger.

Millions of people are supported by hundreds of wild species of palms, which is one of the most important plant families.

Food and medicine for hundreds of communities across the tropics is provided by them.

There are at least 185 palm species that may be threatened in 92 regions according to the research.
