There needs to be a change in the space shuttle's history.

That appears to be the case in the second episode of "Quantum Leap". Titled "Atlantis," the episode shows physicist Ben Song going into space on the space shuttle Atlantis.

The new show is a continuation of the original show that ran from 1989 to 1993 A hologram that only Song can see and hear is helping a new team, led by Song, put right the wrongs of the past.

Martin Gero told collectSPACE.com that the shows are written as a group. Everyone contributed to the show.

Gero said that it wasn't just Lee who was living in awe of his character's career in space.

Everyone dreams of being an astronauts with Raymond. There's no one who hasn't thought about it at one point or another, but seeing the cast get to wear all of the equipment made it even more special.

Lee and his Atlantis crewmates are seen in a video promo wearing bright orange pressure garments and advanced crew escape suits. The extravehicular mobility unit is worn by crew members to perform spacewalks.

In the promo lifting off, the space shuttle Atlantis is shown with footage from the actual mission in 2008 and then in space.

Gero said that the scenes encapsulated the thrill and awe of the space shuttle era.

Robert Yowell was a former space shuttle flight controller.

I worked in mission control at Johnson Space Center in 1998. He said it was an exciting moment. From the moment of launch to the very end of the episode, that is captured in this little excerpt.

"Quantum Leap" has crossed over with NASA before. The first space-themed episode was part of the original series.

Sam Beckett jumps into "Bobo," a chimp that NASA is training for a possible spaceflight on January 24, 1961. NASA used great apes to prove that space travel was safe for humans before they launched the Mercury astronauts.

The Chimpanzees "Enos" and "Ham" were launched by NASA.

Gero said not to expect a nod in "Atlantis" linked to the two NASA-inspired episodes.

He said that they talked about that because it was fun. We are trying to find a balance between being respectful and putting in as many easter eggs as we can from the original show.
