The Entertainment Software Association announced today that the E3 gaming expo will be held in person for the first time in 3 years. The Los Angeles Convention Center is where E3 will take place from June 13 to June 16 and the return of one major in-person event suggests that we could see other in-person events in the future.
Because of the COVID-19 Pandemic and ongoing travel restrictions, there were only two digital-only events. The in-person viewing event for select developers and members of the media was held at the same time as the online event.
Apple has indicated that it is ready to return to in-person events in the future, as restrictions have been loosened. There was a full media audience in attendance at the "Far Out" event in the Steve Jobs Theater.
The Worldwide Developers Conference was held in person at the San Jose Convention Center. Thousands of developers were invited to attend, but Apple used a lottery system to choose those who would show up. The company charged a lot for tickets for the event.
All developers around the world were able to use the online format in 2020 and 2021. Apple's online WWDC has worked well for giving access to sessions and labs to a greater number of developers, so what will happen next year remains to be seen
It is likely that Apple will host some kind of in-person WWDC event, but we could continue to see a more robust online component that provides vital resources to all developers, even those who aren't able to attend in person.
It will be next year before Apple announces its plans for the next decade. If there is an in-person component to allow developers to purchase tickets and travel accommodations, Apple could make an announcement in 2023.
We could see next year's event held from June 5 to June 9 if Apple chooses to hold it earlier in June.
