Should Tua have been allowed to reenter the game after first-half hit? (1:36)

The decision to allow quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to return to the Dolphins' game against the Bills was controversial. There is a time and a place for it.

2:42 PM ET

Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is not in concussion protocol as the team prepares for Thursday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

After hitting the back of his head on the ground in the second quarter, Tagovailoa was evaluated for a concussion and had to leave the game. The Dolphins evaluated him for a concussion on the sideline after he stumbled while trying to jog back to the huddle.

Both Tagovailoa and McDaniel said it was the quarterback's back that made him fall. Tagovailoa hurt his back on a quarterback sneak in the second quarter and had to be helped off the field.

At halftime, Tagovailoa passed the concussion protocol and returned to the game.

The players association wanted a review of the league's concussion protocol because of Tagovailoa's quick return to the game. "If there were any red flags, I wouldn't have allowed my quarterback to be put in harm's way," said the Dolphins' head coach.

He said that player health is one of the things that he's sensitive to and that he's been called emotional from time to time. I don't bother with that at all. Tua wasn't happy with me in the game because he didn't understand why people were talking to him. He might be able to watch replays.

Player safety is the pillar of importance for all of it. We're happy to comply and I feel good about it.

Tagovailoa was sore and dealing with ankle and back issues from the game.

He didn't say whether or not Tagovailoa would be available for Thursday's game, but he did say that they would be ready for anything.

He said that it was his first time on a Thursday night game. The crystal ball is broken, so I can't access it. It's one of the reasons why you have a roster of capable people, that's why we brought Teddy and drafted Skylar. You need to be prepared for these types of changes. We'll be ready for whatever comes our way, just like Teddy was ready in the game.

You just try to do the best you can." We're trying to get as much information as we can. There are a lot of players that we will be adjusting to on the fly, seeing if they can turn it around and give a good outing on Thursday.

Tagovailoa is second in yards per attempt and first in quarterback rating. He ended the game with 186 passing yards and a touchdown.
