A rule will be proposed by the Department of Transportation.

The DOT said in a news release that airlines, third party sellers and metasearch sites will have to clearly disclose baggage fees, change fees, cancellation fees and family-seating fees.

Consumers traveling with a young child will be able to purchase the seats with the fare at all points of sale if the DOT's proposal is adopted.

The Biden administration wants to give customers the information they need to make an informed decision. Surprise fees can add up quickly and make up for a cheap fare.

Pete Buttigieg said that airline passengers should be aware of the true cost of their flights before buying a ticket. The rule would help travelers make informed decisions and save money by requiring airlines to be transparent about their fees.

The August proposal to require airlines to inform passengers that they have a right to receive refunds when a flight is canceled or significantly changed is one of the new proposed rules. Comments are being collected on the proposed rules.

The DOT launched an online dashboard that shows what airlines offer when their flights are delayed or canceled. When an airline issue causes a cancellation, airlines improved their services to flyers with the creation of the dashboard.
