It is not good news for those booking award travel to and from Japan through frequent flyer programs that All Nippon Airways will be increasing fuel surcharges even further. With Japan reopening its borders, this is really suspicious.
The ANA fuel surcharge will be updated as of October 1, 2022, which is bad news. Even though most airlines have higher fuel surcharges in premium cabins, a flight from the United States to Japan will have $434 in fuel surcharges one-way.
The fuel surcharges for travel from outside of Japan were shown in the chart.
The fuel surcharges for travel from outside of Japan are shown below.
ANA had no fuel surcharges through early 2022, but since then, we have seen increases after increases. The reality of oil prices has been reflected by ANA's fuel surcharge.
I don't know what I'm missing. Since their peak, oil prices have dropped, yet ANA continues to raise fuel surcharges. Is it possible that the airline is trying to take advantage of the tourism boom that is about to happen in order to compensate for the depreciation of the JPY?
The Russian airspace closings have meant that ANA has been operating some circuitous routes, but that has been the case for a long time now.
For those who don't know, fuel surcharges are fees that airlines have been charging for years on tickets. When oil prices were high, they were introduced, but most airlines have not been eliminated.
Airlines add fees when costs go up but rarely eliminate them when costs go down. ANA deserves credit for adjusting their fees to account for oil prices. Until now, that was the case.
What does the increase in fuel surcharges mean for consumers? Will tickets go up in price? It's not certain.
All taxes, fees, and fuel surcharges are included in the pricing you see from an airline. For revenue tickets, when an airline raises fuel surcharges, the base fare decreases proportionally (though with fees this high, it does essentially create a minimum fare you'll be charged in various markets)
The biggest implications for award tickets are the programs that pass on fuel surcharges to consumers.
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club is the best place to book All Nippon Airways first class awards.
The value of that will get worse soon, as you're looking at $434 in fuel surcharges alone, and that doesn't include taxes and other fees.
The fuel surcharge will be increased by All Nippon Airways as of October 1. ANA increased them because of higher oil prices. I don't know how ANA can justify increasing fuel surcharges while oil prices are decreasing.
Through programs like All Nippon Airways Mileage Club and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, these fees are passed on to those who redeem their points.
What do you think about the surcharge increases?
