The most recent entry into the MCU was Werewolf by Night. That's a positive thing. The short film, directed by Michael Giacchino, will be on Disney+ on October 7. The adaptation of the horror-centered superhero is quite special. A new side of the universe may just be a love letter to monster and monster movies.
Jack Russell is a monster hunter summoned to compete for the Bloodstone, an ancient relic that gives special powers to its holder. The daughter of the former owner of the stone is one of the competitors. The winner of the bloodstone will be the one who kills a mythical creature. Giacchino doesn't take long because this is a short film. The world, the stakes, the competition, and it's off to the races are all set up by him. If you are familiar with the comic books or just think about the title, you will know that things flip on their head about halfway through.
There are so many characters and encounters in the film that you can't enjoy them. It goes double for the second half when the character becomes more prominent and his sidekick gets more to do. While you would like to see more of the characters and action, the film is a great example of a camp film. Everyone is aware that they are in something fun and frivolous, and play it with flair. It goes for Giacchino as well. The choice of black and white is reminiscent of the early 20th century when monsters ruled the big screen. The blood in the movie looks black and not red. This presentation is a short, sweet, special presentation to introduce a few, cool, new characters.
Anyone who watches would be hard pressed to not enjoy it. Even if it had nothing to do with Marvel, it is a beautiful, over-the-top, entertaining short that works. It's just a bonus that it opens some doors. It shows that in the right hands, the comic book universe is always changing.
Fantastic Fest was where Werewolf By Night was made public. October 7 is when it arrives to Disney+.
