Disney is expected to make an additional $30 million in global ticket sales from the rerelease of the movie, which is currently ranked third at the box office.
The original 2009 movie was pulled from Disney Plus in order to encourage people to go to the theater and see the sequel, which was released in the US on September 23rd.
The movie was re-released in order to build up hype for the sequel.
According to Box Office Mojo, the rerelease of the movie brought in $20 million internationally and $10 million in the US, bringing the total earnings to over $2 million. The movie already ranks as the highest-grossing film of all time, and these additional profits will only help it.
93 percent of domestic ticket sales were for a 3D screening, compared to 74 percent for the original opening weekend of the film. According to data shared by Disney, only 10 percent of viewers watched the recently released THOR: love and thunder in 3D.
There are comments from several theater workers who claim that many other people were also tricked by the TikTok video where one user admitted to mistakenly booking the re-release of the original movie. The success of the rerelease is not likely to be caused by this confusion, as both tickets and marketing material clearly state the movie is a rerelease of the 2009 original.
The opening weekend of the movie could see it stick around for a while longer, since it was originally scheduled to be a two week engagement. The extension is likely to be short so that it doesn't clash with the sequel. The first of four sequels to the original film will be released in North America on December 16th.
