Plans for a huge expansion of the airport were revealed in 2019. Next month, the first phase of this expansion will open, ahead of the World Cup.

Doha Hamad Airport expansion plans

The new airport was opened in the state of DOHA. The initial capacity of the airport was 29 million passengers a year, but there were plans to increase that. It looks like this capacity will be increased ahead of the World Cup.

  • The first phase of the Doha Hamad Airport expansion will open as of October 2022, and this will increase capacity to 58 million passengers per year
  • The final phase of the Doha Hamad Airport expansion will start in January 2023 and is expected to be completed within 2.5 years, and that will increase capacity to 70 million passengers per year

Passengers can expect the airport to expand.

  • A 10,000 square meter (~107,000 square foot) indoor tropical garden with a 268 square meter (~2,900 square foot) water feature
  • 11,720 square meters (~126,000 square feet) of additional retail space and food & beverage outlets
  • A new 9,000 square meter (~97,000 square foot) Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Lounge

The new lounge is expected to be included in the expansion opening in October 2022.

The indoor tropical garden and waterfall concept is similar to the one at Singapore Changi Airport.

Is Singapore's idea being stolen by Doha? Akbar Al Baker, the CEO of the airline, claimed that Singapore stole the idea.

“Somebody copied our design, which was already on the table six years ago. We had individuals from that country, I will not name it, who took that and did it (themselves).”

The Jewel is a shopping mall, while the airport is an international one. I would like to check this out for myself.

The lounge at the airport is very good, but gets crowded during peak times due to the large number of travelers the airline has.

The expansion of the airport will lead to the creation of a nearly 100,000 square foot lounge. The lounge is expected to overlook the tropical garden.

A business center, restaurants, and a spa are expected in the lounge. Incremental lounge capacity should be the result of the existing lounges being retained. The lounge is just over 100,000 square feet, so it will nearly double the lounge capacity for business class passengers.

The lounge will be known as the Al Mourjan Lounge South. The business class experience at the airport would be greatly improved if this opens soon.

The lounge capacity is up at the airport because of this and the new lounges for elite members.

Ahead of the World Cup, the biggest phase of the expansion of the airport will open.

The capacity of the airport will double from 29 million to 58 million passengers annually. A new tropical garden is expected to open soon. The final phase of the expansion will increase the airport's final capacity to around 70 million passengers.

Do you think the expansion of the airport is a good idea?
