Mahomes takes blame for offensive struggles (0:35)

Patrick says that he has to fix the offense. There is a time and a place for this.

The Kansas City Chiefs missed a chip shot field goal in the fourth quarter that would have made a difference in the game. They failed to convert on a fake field goal in the fourth quarter and fumbled a punt that led to a Colts touchdown.

If Matt Ryan hadn't outgunned him in the end, none of that would have mattered. One reason for the loss was the fact that the Chiefs scored two touchdown in four red zone tries.

"We've got to make it so those little mistakes don't cost us the game,'' said Mahomes, who threw an intercept late in the game as the Chiefs were frantically trying to get into field goal range. "We had multiple chances to get in the end zone, and if we get in the end zone one time, don't stall out in the red zone, get seven, the game's over.''

The defense had to play a big part in getting the two touchdown. The defense stopped the Colts on downs and forced a turnover to start the game.

JuJu Smith-Schuster, a free-agent addition, is one of the new wide receivers that Patrick Mahomes is throwing to. He didn't want to use that as an excuse for the Chiefs scoring just 20 points on offense in their two games last week.

He doesn't think there will be any growing pains. You don't know if people will respond to tough situations with new players.

We need to gel all together." I start it with me. I was throwing on guys' back hips instead of in front of him. There were a few instances where we were close to it. You have to execute at a higher level when you're playing a tough game. Our schedule isn't easy. We have a tough game next week against a great defense, so we have to improve quickly. We don't want these losses to pile up if we don't. We want to return to that winning train.

At the end of the first half, TV cameras caught him and Eric Bieniemy having a spirited discussion. The Chiefs didn't want to go into field goal range.

The coach led the player away from Bieniemy.

Mahomes wanted to score. I'm just who I am. The situation we were in was very difficult. I think the smart decision was to go to halftime because I believe it was second or third-and-20. I want to score. I said "let me have a chance at it" and he said "let's get to the locker room and get to the next half"

I'm not sure if that's a fight. That was the end of the discussion.
