Disney is expected to make $30 million from the re-release of the movie.

The international tally of $20 million has box office analysts buzzing, even though domestic ticket sales are in line with projections.

The re-release of the 20th Century studio film is seen as a litmus test for whether or not audiences still want to see it. The first of four sequels to the original film is scheduled to be released in December.

Shawn Robbins, chief media analyst at Box Office.com, said that the film's exclusive play in 3D should bode well for the sequel's much more significant release in December.

Box office analysts agree that there is still interest in the movie. It is not certain if that interest will translate to ticket sales in December for 3D shows.

There are still questions that need to be answered. Given how re-releases have performed in recent years, we can't say that the audience turnout here gave enough of a litmus test for exclusive 3D releases.

It may be important for Disney to offer a variety of screen options, including 2D on premium screens, along with its push for 3D. There was a small window in the early 2000s when audiences were more interested in 3D showings.

This won't be a big issue in other parts of the world. 3D is extremely popular in China. It is important to remember that the bulk of the movie's money was outside of the U.S.

The audiences that supported "Avatar" to the top of the box office charts will likely return for "The Way of Water."

There is still a lot of interest in the 'Avatar' franchise on the big screen. The $20.5 million earned internationally this weekend makes a strong case for a huge debut for the film in December.
