Megan Finnigan celebrates
Everton won the last encounter between the teams at Anfield, with a 1-0 victory in 2019

The Women's Super League season got off to a bad start for the Reds, as they lost at home toEverton.

Megan Finnigan scored the first goal of the game when she headed the ball over the goal line.

When Jess Park shifted the ball onto her left foot, she slid it into the corner to make it 2-0 for the Blues, who were the better team.

There was a record crowd for a WSL game at Anfield for the Derby.

In a fierce derby, it wasEverton who were deserving of the win as they were the better team and did not let up.

The hosts were pinned back for most of the first half and didn't test Brosnan until the second half.

In the first half, there were a lot of missed chances for the two teams, but in the second half, it was the other way around.

Blues defender Gabby George also headed a corner over the bar in the opening six minutes, while Finnigan stung the fingers of Laws with a long-range strike just before the break.

The sold-out away section of the crowd celebrated wildly at the end of the game, which was their first victory under Brian Sorensen.

The majority of the fans in attendance left with a feeling of disappointment as they watched their team claim all three points in the derby.

The previous record for attendance was set in the last meeting of the year when 23,500 were present.

Several members of the crowd invaded the field of play and the players threw their arms up in anger.

Confident Everton stamp their authority

Following on from their success in the Women's Championship last season, the Reds came into this game full of confidence after their shock win over defending champion.

It was a poor season for the club in the 21st century and they got off to a poor start last weekend.

It was the Blues who stamped their authority on the game, and they did it quickly.

It was only a matter of time before they opened the scoring and they went 2-0 up, just as the Reds were starting to find their form.

The missed chance by Stengel was a significant moment in the game and he was at fault for giving the ball away in the build up to the second goal.

Despite a change in shape for the hosts, Matt Beard was powerless to change the outcome.

The Reds pressed for a goal in the dying minutes as substituteYana Daniels volleyed it straight at goalkeeper Brosnan, before Stengel stretched to head over the bar.

A promising sign for a club looking to bounce back from a topsy-turvy past year is that the side played with a lot of creativity and confidence.

When Bennison's late goal went in to confirm the victory for the Toffees, fans will hope that this first victory under him can help to build on the good vibes.
