There are many ways to earn points and miles, from the obvious ones, like flying or spending on a credit card, to some that aren't as well known. Signing up for airline dining rewards programs is a great way to double dip and earn a higher bonus on purchases.

Every airline has a dining rewards program that allows members to earn bonus miles when dining at participating restaurants. It is easy to score extra points on dining with your credit card.

We are going to look at everything you need to know to maximize the program.

AAdvantage Dining overview

You can set it and forget it, and you can get bonus miles whenever you eat at a participating restaurant. To register and link your credit card, go to aadvantagedining.com

If you sign up and spend $25 in your first 30 days, you can earn 1,000 bonus miles, which is worth $17.70. Since they are labeled as bonus miles, they aren't eligible for loyalty points.

You can find a list of restaurants on the website. I found it easier to type in a zip code than it was to type in a restaurant name.

You can link as many cards as you want, but you can only link each card to one airline's dining program. You can't link your restaurant card to two programs at the same time.

Membership is free if you have at least one dining experience every 36 months.

AAdvantage Dining earning rates

The AAdvantage Dining program has three different memberships.

  • Basic member: Earn 1 mile per dollar spent if you elect not to receive email communication from AAdvantage Dining.
  • Select member: Earn 3 miles per dollar spent if you elect to receive email communication from AAdvantage Dining.
  • VIP member: Earn 5 miles per dollar spent if you elect to receive email communication from AAdvantage Dining and have already completed 11 qualified transactions in the current or previous calendar year (members start earning at the VIP level on their 12th qualified transaction).

The earning rates are unrelated to your American Airlines elite status. It's not possible to earn more miles in the AAdvantage Dining program if you have higher AAdvantage elite status.

As soon as the restaurant finalizes the transaction, you will be able to see Miles in your AAdvantage Dining account.

Bonus miles can be earned through the AAdvantage shopping portal.

What cards to use

EDWARD PIZZARELLO/THE POINTS GUY

You can earn up to 5 miles per dollar spent at eligible restaurants if you are a member of the AAdvantage Dining program. The bad news is that these AAdvantage miles are not included in your card rewards. The restaurant at which you're eating will process your transaction, so you'll want to pick a card with a great bonus category. There are some popular choices.

If you're focused on earning American Airlines miles, you might consider using the World Elite Mastercard. The 2 miles per dollar spent at restaurants is a lower return than the other options.

The Points Guy did not collect the information for the Mastercard. The card issuer did not review or provide the card details on this page.

If you have more than one card, you should link them all to your AAdvantage Dining account so you don't have to worry about paying the bill. I keep both of my cards linked to my account so I can switch between them if I want to earn Membership rewards or Ultimate rewards points.

Bottom line

If you sign up for an airline dining rewards program, you can earn even more miles when dining out. If you eat out regularly and a restaurant you frequent is one of the approved partners, you may have an easy time earningVIP status and earning more money.

If you don't fly with American Airlines, the AAdvantage Dining program is a good way to generate account activity. If you keep your account active, your miles won't expire.
