Nicol: Ronaldo showed his age vs. Real Sociedad (1:03)

Steve Nicol spoke about the performance of the Man United player. There is a time and a place for this.

7:00 AM ET

The man says he's not leaving yet. The next European Championship, which will be held in Germany in the summer of 2024, is one of the things the Manchester United forward wants to achieve.

He said last week that his road is not over. My ambition is high, and I feel motivated. I want to be a part of the European Championship as well. I'm going to assume that immediately.

At the end of his 22nd season as a top-flight professional, the 39-year-oldRonaldo will be. His ability to keep fit and take care of his body is not in question, he's averaged around 50 games a season for club and country since he was a teenager, but there remains a debate about where his club career will take him next

He wanted to stay at Manchester United for as long as possible so he wanted to leave the club in the summer. There are question marks over his next move and what his future in football looks like, even though a move didn't come to fruition.

Option 1: He leaves Man United in January

As he nears the end of his playing career, he wanted to continue playing in the competition in which he is the all-time top scorer, which is why he was upset that Manchester United didn't make the playoffs. He was forced to make his Europa League debut against Real Sociedad after flirting with a number of top European clubs.

Not only is he not playing in the European Championship, but he is not playing at all. It's unlikely that he will start the derby against Manchester City in October if either Anthony Martial or MarcusRashford are fit after the international break.

There is a chance thatRonaldo will leave in January. He might be able to find a club that qualified for the knockout rounds of the European competition and give himself another chance to add to his five titles. A January move would depend on United allowing him to leave. The club have distanced themselves from making any significant signings in the next window due to the lack of options at centre-forward.

Option 2: He leaves Man United next summer

This break would give him the chance to pick a club best placed to give him the chance to score more goals, win more trophies and prepare him for the 2024 Euros.

After signing an initial two-year contract when he returned to Old United in 2021, he can start negotiations with other clubs before the end of the season.

One of the main reasons why he stayed at United was the lack of market for his services. It opens up the possibility of a move away from Europe ifRonaldo gives up on playing in theChampions League again.

According to sources, he wasn't ready to move to the Middle East despite being offered a lot of money.

Option 3: He extends his contract at Old Trafford

This has never been ruled out by United and Ten Hag openly admitted it was a possibility. The option of a third year was on top of the two years that he had already signed.

Even though negotiations over a longer deal were at a standstill, United were able to extend his stay by an additional year. It would need the player and his representatives to agree before it could happen, according to sources.

Staying at the club for another year seemed a long way off in the summer but sources say it has been noticeable how committed and motivatedRonaldo has been since the transfer window closed

If United were to have a good season and get back into the Champions League at the first attempt, he might feel like Old United is where he should be.
