The vice president is in South Korea for a visit.

"North Korea's launch of a missile is an act of grave provocation that threatens the peace and security of the Korean peninsula and the international community," the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

South Korean and US forces, including the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, will take part in a drill this week.
