The play backfires as players collide in the field.
In the third quarter of the Hurricanes' 45-31 loss to Middle, Tyler Van Dyke was benched for the first time in his college career.
A week after not producing a touchdown in a 17-9 loss to Texas A&M, Van Dyke struggled again against inferior competition. He was pulled after completing 16 of 32 passes for 138 yards and one touchdown, but the Blue Raiders picked him off twice.
They played better than we did. The people were better. We didn't get the job done. There isn't an excuse. Real men look in the mirror and do something about it, and don't allow any cracks to come from the inside. All of us came here for a reason. There's a lot of work that needs to be done.
The Hurricanes lost to the No. 25 team. The starter for the next game against North Carolina won't be decided until October.
He said it was a poor job. It was a poor job by our organization and a credit to Middle for doing what they did.
Most of the fans who showed up for the game were gone before the final whistle, as the Hurricanes heard plenty of boos from the crowd.



The biggest win in program history was achieved by Middle Tennessee State. Middle Tennessee State stunned Miami for its first win in 21 tries against ranked opponents after Chase Cunningham passed for 408 yards and three scores.
Rick Stockstill said it was a butt- kicking from the beginning.
He was correct in his opinion. MTSU never trailed, forced turnovers on Miami's first three possessions, stopped the Hurricanes on downs on three other occasions, and had another 89-yard pass in there for good measure.
In the first quarter, England-Chisolm caught a 71-yard touchdown pass, and in the fourth, he caught a 98-yard touchdown pass.
Cunningham threw a 69-yard scoring throw to the player. Cunningham and Frank Peasant both scored for the Blue Raiders.
Cunningham said he trusts his guys to the end.
Key'Shawn Smith returned a kick for a touchdown in the first quarter and Miami never recovered.
"We looked at each other and said, 'We're going to win this game,'" Rivers said. We were punched in the mouth.
Kamren Kinchens said that everyone played horrible.
He engineered a five-play, 72-yard touchdown drive fueled by passes of 39 and 23 yards, Miami's two biggest gains of the day to that point, and got the Hurricanes within 31-17.
The win was a long time coming for Stockstill, who played for Florida State. Stockstill played for the Hurricanes in the 1980's and 1981's.
They were close. This one was different.
Jaylin Lane said that many people doubted them. This proves that we are perseverance.
