It was a learning experience for quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who was playing in his first Big Ten opener.
After the second game of the season, McCarthy was the starter and he led Michigan to its fourth win of the season against the Maryland. McCarthy knows he needs to improve and he made some mistakes.
McCarthy said after the game that he wanted some things back that went out there. I was happy with the way we were able to respond to certain situations. It was a good team out there, Maryland has a great offense, they have a great defense, and I was happy with the way we responded when some adversity crept in.
McCarthy had two turnovers in the game, both of which were recovered by his teammates, and the UM team found themselves in a back and forth game with Maryland.
He completed 18 of 26 passes for 220 yards and two touchdown He didn't have any picks, but he admitted the timing was off with his teammates.
The timing doesn't seem to be an issue for the receiver. McCarthy said that he took full responsibility for all the misses. It's been awhile since my arm felt as good as it did today, after I dealt with some sore muscles in the summer. Being able to go through the practices this week will be huge.
Despite some mistakes, Michigan still got the victory. The run game from Corum was a big part of the win. It was the first time in almost two years that a Michigan running back had over 200 yards rushing and two touchdown.
The spark Michigan needed was provided by Corum, who ran 33 yards for a touchdown on 4th-and-1 to give Michigan the lead at the half.
Corum said that J.J. snapped the ball quickly and we caught them off guard. Maryland's defense is good, Maryland's offense is good, it wasn't like we were playing a scrub team.
They have to go to Iowa in order to get the job done. Jim Harbaugh told reporters after the game that they will have to answer the question of whether or not they can play the first road game of the season and be successful.
Harbaugh will use what they learned about the offense in this game to prepare for their next challenge.
Harbaugh said that he learns more as he goes. You learn more about your team and yourself as a player when you play every game.
