Ted Cruz was booed by the crowd when he said that his plan to stop school shootings would put more police in schools.
There was a school shooting at the Texas Tribune Festival.
The audience demanded age restrictions on assault weapons.
Ted Cruz's plan to place more police officers in schools was met with boos from the Texas audience.
At the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin on Saturday, Cruz was met with a receptive audience.
When there is a mass murder, Democrats in Washington immediately take firearms away from law-abiding citizens, Cruz said. There is a minor problem that it doesn't work so you can clap for that. Gun control isn't effective if the goal is to stop these crimes.
The audience seemed to disagree with Cruz at times, but he argued that gun control measures punish law-abiding citizens.
Cruz said that if you wanted to stop crime, you should target the bad guys. The criminals, the felons, the fugitives are targets. You prosecute them, put them in jail, and get them off the streets.
Business Insider previously reported that Cruz said the National Rifle Association stood up for the rights of every American. Cruz has received more donations from gun rights groups than any other lawmaker.
Cruz told the crowd that he tried to pass legislation that would double the number of police officers in school. "If we want to keep our kids safe, the most effective step we can take is to have police officers there to protect them who can intercept a mass murderer before he gets into the school and stop them."
The school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in May that left 19 elementaryschoolers and two teachers dead was the subject of more yells from the audience. The shooter remained at large for over an hour after the shooting. Police officers failed to prioritize saving the lives of innocent victims over their own safety according to an interim report.
Cruz said that the Uvalde shooter was successful in his efforts because he was able to get into the school through an unlocked door.
If you have a solution to stop the murderers, I would love to hear it. Cruz wants them to be thrown in jail. They need to be stopped before committing these crimes. The best way to stop them is to have armed officers on campus that can stop them before they kill our children.
"Look, instead you guys can sing kumbaya with them and hope they'll just stop, but what you're proposing doesn't work," Cruz said.
A person from the audience yelled, "Eighteen-year-old boys don't need an assault rifle."
