The New York City housing market is notorious for buyers willing to pay more for less but the size of a typical Manhattan starter home is only getting smaller.

The size of starter homes in New York has decreased by 9% since the summer of 2019. Manhattan homes are still the smallest in Queens and the Bronx.

The median square footage for a Manhattan home as of August is 686 square feet. The median size of homes in Brooklyn is 928 square feet.

Buyers can take comfort in the fact that the price of a square foot in Manhattan is less than five years ago. Since the beginning of the year, prices have fallen by half.
