As the tech world's resident Cool Boss, Google made sure to cement itself. But not now. According to internal audio obtained by CNBC, the tension between the CEO and the people who work for them is growing.
Pichai told employees at a companywide all-hands meeting this week that he remembers when the company was small.
"We shouldn't think of money as fun," the frustrated executive said. People may be having fun in a startup, but it shouldn't be seen as a sign of wealth.
It's unsurprising that it's trying to cut some fat since it hasn't had a great financial year. According to CNBC, its third quarter earnings are expected to be down 40% from a year ago.
The company staffers who have enjoyed some fairly high employee perks are not happy with the belt-tightening. They accused the workers of cutting travel and funds during the meeting.
The CEO said that the company's issues were caused by the broader economic troubles and bureaucratic expansion. One of the toughest macroeconomic conditions in the past decade has made us more responsible.
Pichai dodged the question of whether top execs will take pay cuts of their own. He called for sacrifice and unity in other places.
"I think it's important that as a company, we pull together to get through times like this," Pichai told his employees.
Culture changes are difficult for a bean bag forward operation. He is correct that times are difficult. Their employees are taking those changes seriously. They aren't in their sleeppods at work.
