Some routes are better than others. Natural Selection decided to launch a guided cycling tour through the most coveted wildlife area in Africa, the Okavango Delta.
The six-night cycling safaris is the first of its kind and is designed for small groups of explorers. Travelers can explore by bike the ancient elephant paths that have shaped this pristine Botswana landscape for centuries, cycling alongside incredible spotting of wildlife, as well as wandering riverbanks, mopane forests and savanna grassland.
The guides will lead travelers through off-road terrain, including single-track game trails and jeep tracks, and reveal the secrets that pave the animal paths of the Okavango Delta. One of the most exclusive wilderness destinations in the world is the Okavango. There are palm- and papyrus-fringed islands and thick woodlands in the Delta.
Cyclists will ride for three to five hours daily. The photo is courtesy of NaturalSelection.
The Moremi Game Reserve is the first reserve in Africa to be established by locals. It is the only part of the Delta that is protected. It holds a lot of importance. Moremi is considered to be one of the prettiest reserves in Africa. The reserve is located in the central and eastern parts of the Okavango, which is home to one of the most diverse and wealthiest environments on the planet. The region has over 400 species of birds, many of which are migratory and some of which are rare. The reserve is now known as a 'Big Five' destination.
Travelers will start riding at sunrise on a trail built by elephants in the Mopane forests. There are a lot of stops for wildlife spotting.
Nights are spent in a luxury mobile camp with a back-up vehicle always close by. The Khwai Private Reserve is a 200,000-hectare area of pristine wilderness in the north of the Okavango Delta. The Khwai landscape is one of the most beautiful in the country. Wild dogs, serval cats, honey badgers, and the elusive pangolin are some of the rare animals that can be found in the area.
The trip ends with two nights at Little Sable. The photo is courtesy of NaturalSelection.
Eight traditional style tents, on raised wooden platforms, each with a private viewing deck, en-suite bathroom, and outside shower, are offered at Little Sable. You will feel a sense of freedom in camp because of the wide-open views.
Travelers can swap one night at Skybeds, a 16-foot high wooden platform with only a mosquito net between them and the night sky. 400 bull elephants, along with lion, leopard, eland, zebra, and more, can be seen from the platform, which overlooks a waterhole. Each platform has a shower and basin under the sleeping area.
