The oldest product in Apple's lineup is the AirPods Max. Some of the best indications of what to expect from the second-generation AirPods Max will be provided by the second-generation AirPods Pro.

Rumors about a successor to the original AirPods Max are not very strong. The last thing we heard about the next-generation AirPods Max was a report from Mark Gurman in May of 2021. There are at least ten possible features that could make their way to the second version of the AirPods Max.

H2 Chips

The first device to contain the H2 chip is the second- generation AirPods Pro.

The H2 chip is able to improve sound quality on the AirPods Pro and improve battery life. It is almost certain that the next version will have an H2 chip in each earcup. Improvements to the device's audio hardware will likely be made with the help of the chips.

Bluetooth 5.3 Connectivity

Along with the H2 chip, the new AirPods Pro feature a specification that has come to the entire iPhone 14 lineup as well as the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra. It is certain that the second-generation AirPods Max will have the same features. Enhancements to reliability, connection performance, and power consumption can be found in the latest version of the software.

Improved Active Noise Cancellation

The second-generation AirPods Pro feature improved Active Noise Cancellation that is up to two times more effective than before, thanks to the H2 chip.

The outward-facing microphones are used to detect external sound while the inward-facing microphone is used to listen to the sound in the ear. The sound signal reaching the ears is adjusted by the new AirPods Pro.

A new driver and improved acoustics are included in the second generation of the AirPods Pro. With the H2 chip, the second-gen AirPods Max will also offer enhanced ANC, as the only other AirPods to do.

Adaptive Transparency

The second-generation AirPods Pro feature an all-new adaptive transparency mode that allows important environmental noise like speech in, while reducing unwanted environmental noise like a passing vehicle sirens, construction tools, or loud speakers at a concert.

Apple says the feature is designed for more comfortable listening. It's highly likely that the second-generation AirPods Max will feature adaptive transparency.

Conversation Boost

Conversation boost, a feature that has only been available to the AirPods Pro, could also be gained by the AirPods Max.

Conversation Boost uses the beam-forming microphones on the AirPods Pro to boost the volume of a person talking directly in front of you, making it easier to hear what they're saying.

Skin-Detect Sensors

The AirPods Max is the only current- generation product without Apple's skin-detect sensor technology. When placed over a user's ears, the current AirPods Max use optical IR sensors.

Since the AirPods Max isn't likely to be triggered on a surface or in a pocket, skin-detection sensors could help pause and resume more quickly. Better battery life is something that the AirPods Max could take advantage of.

Longer Battery Life

The third- and second- generation AirPods have improved battery life. If Apple doesn't shrink the size of the internal battery, the second-gen AirPods Max could get a similar battery life boost.

Sweat and Water Resistance

IPX4 rated sweat and water resistant earbuds and charging cases are included in the third- and second- generation of the AirPods. This is an area that Apple has improved over time, but the first-generation AirPods Max do not have a sweat or water resistance rating.

Given Apple's focus on health and fitness, a sweat and water resistance rating for the second-gen model is plausible. It's not out of the question for the second-generation model to have more of a focus on fitness since Apple Fitness+ launched just a day before the release of the first- generation AirPods Max.

U1 Chip and Precision Finding

The Apple U1 chip for Precision Finding in the Find My app is similar to the AirTag item tracker.

A U1 chip in the second-generation version of the AirPods Max could allow for a much more precise way to locate the headphones.

Charging

Adding the ability to charge using an Apple Watch is one of the new features of the second- generation AirPods Pro.

It is too early to say if the second-gen AirPods Max will feature a new way to charge, such as via MagSafe, but such a change would necessitate deeper changes to the AirPods Max's design. The fact that Apple now provides four different ways to charge the AirPods Pro could mean that it wants to expand this to its highest-end headphones in some way.
