A woman who just gave birth to a baby in her arms poses for a picture in a hospital bed. But it was a surrogate mother, not the reality TV star, who gave birth to the baby, and the photo that many considered arrogant and disrespectful.

Something is off with people becoming parents via surrogacy and then taking pictures in a hospital bed with a new born. It's completely unnecessary. They could have just posted a picture of the baby in it's bassinet. https://t.co/p9XGMfMZMN

One critic on the mom discussion site Mumsnet complained that it made him feel sick when a woman tried to remove the mother from the picture.

One person wrote thatRenting a womb, commissioning a baby, and posing in a hospital bed as if that cost and reality was the surrogate mother's, is not good.

Margaret Atwood's novel of a future in which the remaining fertile women are forced to give birth for women of authoritarian leaders who are pretending to be the children's actual mothers was the subject of complaints.

Several people defended Kim for taking the time to bond with her baby in the hospital bed.

I don't really have a problem with this...I can't carry a pregnancy bevause of my health and we were looking into surrogacy. If we had been able to have a child through surrogacy, I'd want to have the same moments every other new Mom does. I'd probably take the same pic.

The parents get a room adjacent to the room where the surrogate is giving birth to wait in. They discuss this in the newest episode of their show.

The hospital photo was released on the day of the premiere of the new season of "TheKardashians."

The baby's birth was shown in the first episode. It focused on the painful experience of KhloéKardashian learning that her father had cheated on her again and that his son was born in December.

It's not clear why a surrogate was used by theKardashian. True Thompson was her first child with Thompson. As their relationship began to heal, the couple decided to have another baby. They aren't together anymore.

In an interview with Heat magazine in July, a source said undisclosed medical reasonsfactored into her decisions She didn't want to put a huge strain on her body with a second baby.

There was a report of fertility issues, but the fertilized egg was used for the surrogate.

Kim had two of her children through surrogates. She is said to suffer from a dangerous condition in which the placenta can attach too deeply into the uterus.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists does not recommend making well-informed decisions when using a surrogate mother. The practice has critics. Financial arrangements that force women who have few options to escape poverty to carry other people's babies are criticized. Many surrogate moms say they are grateful for the compensation that helped change the financial future for their families, even though they freely chose the arrangements.

Although I don't like the trend for celebrities to use them for convenience if there is no medical need, I don't understand the argument against surrogates.

They are able to make informed decisions, will have been told about the risks, and decided it was worth it for them. There are issues of power imbalance and equity with surrogates mostly coming from poor background and need the money, but I am not sure if that makes it inherently wrong.
