Anger over the death of an Iranian woman who was arrested by the morality police has led to widespread dissent against Iran's hard-line Islam. On a daily basis, protesters and Iranian security forces clash. The country's strict dress code allowed women to remove their hijabs in public.

On Wednesday, President Raisi was going to be interviewed by CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour. He abandoned the interview after she refused to wear a headscarf.

While in New York City for the UN General Assembly, Raisi criticized the double standards of some governments regarding human rights. He was going to interview Amanpour for the first time in the US in the evening.

Amanpour said that his aide asked her to wear a headscarf, and she refused.

She wrote that the interview wouldn't happen if she wore a headscarf. The man referred to the situation in Iran as a matter of respect.

The death of a young Kurdish woman while in the custody of the morality police in Tehran sparked a series of protests in Iran.

Tehran's police chief said that Amini was arrested for having an improper hijab and for wearing tight pants. Women in Iran are required to cover their hair completely and wear loose clothes that hide their bodies as part of laws enacted after the Islamic Revolution in the 70's.

Amini died of a heart attack while in custody, according to authorities.

Amini's family said that she had no health issues. Amjad Amini said that he was not allowed to see the back of her head before she died.

She denied that she was beaten by police.

There were protests in her hometown of Saqez after her funeral. They grew in size and scope as protesters called for the downfall of the regime. Women burning their hijabs and cutting their hair are shown in videos.

There isn't an official count of how many people have been killed. At least nine people have died, according to the AP. Iran Human Rights claimed that 31 people were killed.

The mobile networks were shut down. Netblocks said that Iran is experiencing the most severe internet restrictions since the November protests.

Iran is facing international condemnation for the violent suppression of protesters. In cities around the world, people protested outside Iranian embassies. The US imposed sanctions on the country's morality police for abuse and violence against Iranian women.

The Iranian government has targeted people in the past who protested against the treatment of women in public. The UN Human Rights Office said that authorities have increased their enforcement of the women's dress code in recent months. The agency said it has verified videos that show women being hit with batons and thrown into police vans for not wearing a hijab.
