The no-4k streaming player is being announced today. It is rumored that it is called the Chromecast with Google TV HD and will be part of the company's lineup. The original $35 Chromecast became an unexpected hit nearly a decade ago due to its support for Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos.

Instead of relying solely on casting for entertainment like it used to, Google has embraced a traditional lean back experience with its TV platform and remote control.

Like similar streaming products from Amazon and Roku that top out at1080p quality, the Chromecast HD is aimed at those who haven't yet made the 4K TV upgrade. You can buy it from the usual retail partners such as Best Buy.

There is reason to be concerned about the performance of this device. The software experience that the 2020 Chromecast is meant to showcase is not as good as it could be, and it comes with less than 8 gigabytes of storage. There is more that can be done to improve the speed and responsiveness of Google TV, despite the fact that the company has already taken many steps to do so.

The company isn't launching a faster, more powerful 4K- capable Chromecast alongside the cheaper HD model. The 2020 product was already lacking in headroom when it was released, because it was two years since the last refresh. The HD variant has a less powerful chip and less memory than the 4K version.

The 4K product lacks support for AV1 decoding. It is open source and royalty-free, and it is more efficient at streaming high-quality video content. In order to push native AV1 decoding on hardware partners, such as Roku, it is no wonder that Google is adopting it.

The budget device will run a newer version of the operating system than the 4K model: it ships with a newer version of the operating system. An update for the latter is coming soon, according to the search engine.

The Fire TV Stick and the Roku Express were the primary competitors. There isn't much of a price difference between the products and the alternatives.

Fire TV, Roku OS, and even Apple's tvOS are all platforms that I like to use. lag issues can affect the experience. That experience would be served well by a high powered streamer. It isn't in the cards at the moment, but don't expect any surprises at the event.
