New York Attorney General Letitia James announced Wednesday that she had filed a civil lawsuit against the former president and his three oldest children.

I would like to thank James for acknowledging my help in bringing accountability to the Mussolinis. Cohen wrote on his verified account. I have been filled with sadness, pain and anger. The announcement made it all worth it.

In a news conference to announce the lawsuit, James noted Cohen had played a major role in kicking off the three year investigation, which she said involved a review of millions of documents and interviews with 65 witnesses.

She said that Mr. Trump and his allies may argue that the penalties are too harsh. The investigation only started after Michael Cohen testified before Congress.

James wants to bar Trump, Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump from doing business in the state of New York, as well as make them pay about $250 million in restitution and limit their access to loans, according to a report.

Her office made criminal referrals to federal prosecutors and the IRS because they believed the Trumps to have broken federal law.

Cohen told Congress that Trump overstated his wealth before he was president, including inflating his assets to get a loan to buy the Buffalo Bills.

He said that Trump inflated his wealth to reduce his real estate taxes.

Cohen was once one of Trump's closest advisers, but he turned on him after the attorney was indicted for facilitating a hush money payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels to keep her from revealing an alleged affair with Trump. Cohen said it was done by Trump.

Cohen was sentenced to prison for tax crimes, fraud, campaign finance violations and lying to Congress. There were no consequences over the scheme.

Cohen has been speaking out against his former boss and working with authorities to investigate any wrongdoing by the former president's family.
