Lonzo Ball will have an arthroscopic debridement of his left knee and will need to be reexamined in four to six weeks.
After an initial knee surgery in January, the procedure will be performed in Los Angeles next Wednesday.
He hasn't played in a game in over a month. The team announced a recovery time of six to eight weeks before the surgery, but he has continued to experience pain in his left knee during his rehabilitation.
It kept him out of action for the rest of the regular season and playoffs, but he was able to return in the summer.
It's the third time in his career that Ball, who turns 25 in October, will have undergone surgery on his left knee -- he had another operation in July of last year while playing for the Los Angeles Lakers but returned on time for training camp A debridement is the removal of damaged tissue from a wound.
The regular season begins in Miami on October 19th. Ball's surgery will sideline him until at least late October, but the team says he is scheduled only to be reexamined then, so it's not clear when he will return to the court.
In his first season in Chicago after signing a four-year, $80 million contract, Ball averaged 13.0 points, 5.4 rebound and 5.1 assists while shooting 42% from 3.
