Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on members of the United Nations to strip the country of its UN Security Council veto as part of an adamant speech.
Zelensky laid out several conditions for peace in a speech to the UN General Assembly.
Zelensky wanted to create an international tribunal to punish Russia, and he also wanted to take Russia out of the UN Security Council.
Zelensky supports plans to limit Russia's oil and natural gas income by capping the price at which the country can sell petroleum, as well as suggesting imposing visa restrictions on Russians.
Zelensky pushed back against the idea of giving up Russian-occupied territory in exchange for peace by saying his military could return the Ukrainian flag to the entire territory with the force of arms.
Zelensky claimed his administration had 88 rounds of negotiations with Russia before the start of the invasion.
Zelensky said that a crime had been committed against Ukraine.
Zelensky has advocated removing Russia from the Security Council in the past. Changing the UN charter or expelling the country from the UN is the most straightforward way to remove Russia from the body. There is no way to overturn a veto.
World leaders gathered in New York this week for the UN General Assembly's session, and the war in Ukraine was front and center. President Joe Biden called Russia's invasion "needless" and urged other countries to show their support for Ukraine. As Ukrainian forces press a counteroffensive to regain control of territory that was occupied by Russia early in the war, the session is taking place. The eastern counteroffensive picked up important victories earlier this month as Russian forces left the area. Russian President Putin said on Wednesday that Russia may be willing to use its nuclear arsenal if there is a threat to its territorial integrity.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is expected to lead a Russian delegation at the UN General Assembly.
