The Space Force is very close to us. It's really serious. They're not taken very seriously, and it can be hard to watch every other branch of the US military be celebrated in glory and splendor in an endless stream of shows and films, while you get a Steve Carrell series that just makes fun of you.

It's hard to retain sympathy when the Space Force tries to make itself look bad. The Space Force's "official" theme song was recently unveiled for all to enjoy. You want to know if it's a good thing? The answer isn't yes.

Woodwind Heavy

The instrumental vibe needs to be addressed first. This isn't the 1700s anymore and we understand the desire to go for a classic theme. George Washington didn't cross the Delaware to stay in Revolutionary times because he wasn't the target audience here.

No dislike to woodwinds. We are pro- orchestra. This particular direction has a Barney-cleanup-song-but-for- kids-born-in-1774 feel. The move wasn't the one.

Let's talk about lyrics. The Space Force is referred to as our "mighty watchful eye" in the theme's opening scene. No, very Sauron. It's always difficult to take seriously the Space Force's insistence on calling its service people "Guardians."

We don't mind that the Force is standing guard both night and day, but we wonder if that's what the military is supposed to do. The line between day and night in space isn't always clear. It might be more of an issue if Space Force had any service members off world.

Missed the Mark

The people behind "Semper Supra" seem to be doing the best they can with what they have.

Sean Nelson, the chief musician of the U.S. Coast Guard Band, wanted the song to reflect what the Space Force is.

We aren't getting "modern, new and very advanced" from "Semper Supra." It captures Space Force's energy quite well, but it just isn't cool.

Space Force members are annoyed that nobody takes their plight seriously.
