Aeroplan is one of the best loyalty programs in the industry.

The program's commitment to the award chart, lack of fuel surcharges and ability to add stopovers are some of the reasons why this is the case. All Star Alliance airlines and a few non-alliance partners can be booked with Aeroplan.

In September 2022, Air Canada will be able to book stops online. Customers had to call in order to add a stopover to their itinerary, which took hours.

A one-way ticket with Aeroplan costs 5000 points. You can save thousands of points if you book individual one-way tickets or a multicity itinerary with most other airline loyalty programs.

I used the online stopover tool to add a stopover to my Aeroplan booking. How did I do it?

Aeroplan award chart

AIRCANADA.COM

Aeroplan's award chart is useful for international premium-cabin seats on partner airlines.

The world is broken into four regions by Aeroplan. It's important to know where you're going and how much you'll pay for your award ticket.

There are award charts that show distances between regions. You will pay more for your award redemption if you fly further. Paying more points for longer itineraries is what you can get creative with.

There is a complete guide to Aeroplan's rules.

Stopover requirements

The rules for booking Aeroplan stopovers need to be discussed first.

One-way and round-trip tickets can have stopovers on them. Here are a few requirements that need to be considered.

  • Stopovers must be at least 24 hours and cannot exceed 45 days.
  • Stopovers aren’t allowed in North America, regardless of the destination.
  • Your connecting flight must be less than double the physical mileage of a theoretical nonstop flight.
  • You cannot fly through the same airport twice on one-way tickets.

Aeroplan can allow up to six segments on a one-way ticket.

You can add a stop to your Aeroplan award ticket for 5,000 points.

Why the stopover policy is great

I want to talk about Aeroplan's stopover policy before I show you how I booked my trip.

It is possible to visit more than one destination. You might be left booking separate one-way tickets which require more points. It's a game-changer to be able to redeem 5000 additional points for a stop.

The stopover policy can be useful.

  • Turkish Airlines business class from Chicago to Cairo with a stopover in Istanbul.
  • Etihad Airways business class from New York to Karachi, Pakistan, with a stopover in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
  • ANA business class from Los Angeles to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, with a stopover in Tokyo.
  • Swiss business class from Washington to Johannesburg with a stopover in Zurich.
  • Lufthansa business class from Boston to Nairobi, Kenya, with a stopover in Frankfurt.

It's not necessary to fly business class to book a stop. For example, you can connect from a United flight to an Etihad flight on a single itinerary.

There is a way to plan a free stop on your next trip.

Booking stopovers

You can leverage Aeroplan to book stopovers on most flights, even on partners. ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

Break down the itinerary and find award availability for each leg.

Say you would like to go from Chicago to Cairo with a stop in Istanbul on Turkish Airlines.

If you want to search for award availability from O'Hare International Airport to Istanbul Airport, you need to start there. You wouldn't search for a flight from IST to CAI alone.

If you do this, you will be more likely to find flights with award availability. The flight numbers and times are important to you.

You can find the exact number of points needed to book flights by looking at the award chart. We are looking for the " Between North America and Atlantic zones" chart.

Air Canada has a distance-based award chart for travel within and between regions. Great Circle Mapper is the one I use for this.

GCMAP.COM

The route from Chicago to Cairo is 6, 257 miles. This costs 95,000 Aeroplan points and is based on the award chart.

It's time to look for award space now that you know how many points you need.

I started searching for the Chicago-to-Istanbul segment. I narrowed down my search by using the search filters.

The Istanbul-to-Cairo segment was on my radar.

It costs thousands of points to book these award tickets separately. We don't want to do that We want to make sure we are using the option.

If you open a new tab, you can start a new search for Aeroplan stopovers. You should select the multi-city/stopover option and then select the book with points option.

Click the button if you want to add a stop in your destination. Go to the "Stopover city" box. Add how long you would like to stay before you head to your final destination.

If you were booking an award ticket from Chicago to Cairo without a stop, here is what you'd see. It would cost 100,000 points to get to Cairo. You can add a few days in Istanbul for 5000 more points.
