Biden said during the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly that Russia had carried out a pointless war.

Hours after Putin delivered his own remarks in a pre-recorded televised speech Wednesday morning in which he announced he would draft up to 300,000 reservists, Biden gave a speech. He claimed that Russia is prepared to use all means necessary to defend the country's territorial integrity. There were referendums on annexation to Russia in eastern and southern Ukrainian regions. The UN charter was violated by the referendum, according to Biden.

There are more than 150 world leaders coming to New York this week for the UN General Assembly, but only two of them, Russian President Putin and China's president. The meeting is the largest annual gathering of leaders and the first in-person meeting since the Covid-19 Pandemic. The war in Ukraine is expected to be a key focus of the meeting, and in opening remarks Tuesday the UN Secretary-General pointed out Russia's invasion as one of the "big dramatic challenges of our age."
