The G Cloud gaming handheld was leaked last month, but is finally being announced today. The $349 handheld will arrive on October 17th with access to a number of services. The focus is on cloud gaming and the handheld has been engineered to provide 12 hours or more of battery life.
The cloud gaming handheld has a 7 inch screen with a 60Hz refresh rate. Two offset thumbsticks, a D-pad, and Y, B, A, and X buttons are included in the white handheld. There are four buttons at the front of the store.
The sub-menu on the Logitech G button is similar to the one on the xbox controller. You can use the home button to return to the launcher. Most modern controllers have two bumper buttons and twotrigger buttons. There are also remappable controls and a gyro on the handheld.
The processor inside is an Octa-core one that can run up to 2.3 GHz. There is 64 gigabytes of storage and 4 gigabytes of memory. The 6,000mAh battery should be charged in 2.5 hours with a single port of the universal serial bus. There is no 5G or sim card support here, so you will need to be near wi-fi for cloud games.
The integration of the two services into the handheld was done by Logitech. The switch-like interface will allow you to launch each service, but the xbox cloud gaming app is just a basicPWA, so there's no deep integration into the device. You can't pin specific cloud games to the home screen.
The device's promise of more than 12 hours of battery life and its lightweight frame is what draws people to it. The G Cloud Gaming Handheld is less than half the weight of the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck. The switch is a little heavier than the steam deck, but it is a lot less heavy.
This handheld has been designed with the help of the Chinese company, which has expertise in software. If you want to use this outside of gaming, you can use the handheld mode with the game launcher. YouTube and Chrome will be included in the box along with other apps.
The handheld is capable of running some games, but it isn't being marketed as a cloud gaming device. That is a new market for handheld consoles, as typically mobile game players want to access their games while traveling in cars, trains, and planes where internet isn't good. You will need to be near a wi-fi signal in order to use the handheld.
The G Cloud gaming handheld won't be available in the US and Canada in October. There is a limited $299.99 pre-order offer on top of the retail price. It could be a tough sell for what is mostly a cloud gaming device because of the price.
On October 17th, the G Cloud Gaming Handheld will be available at a number of retailers.
