The Republicans in Florida want a man from the state to be their next White House ticket.

A USA Today/Suffolk University poll shows Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis leading Donald Trump by a wide margin in a presidential primary.

That's a reversal from a January poll in which Trump won by a wide margin.

David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, said in a statement that Donald Trump was trailing in a contest.

Paleologos said that the findings are significant given that during the 2016 primary, Trump easily defeated Sen. Marco Rubio on his home turf.

One of the most talked about topics in US politics is whether Ron DeSantis would enter a presidential race against Trump, the man who vaulted him to the top of the governor's race in Florida.

He is up for reelection in Florida on November 8 and he has not said if he wants to be president. He'll be facing off against Charlie Crist, who used to be a Republican and resigned from Congress last month.

It looks like the race is going to be good for DeSantis. The USA Today/Suffolk University poll projected a 7 point lead for DeSantis.

Just 37% of voters said Florida's economy was "good" or "excellent" in the poll, down 10 points from January.

Half of voters said they were worse off than four years ago, but the poll didn't ask if voters blamed the Biden or DeSantis administrations for their economic struggles. It found that DeSantis had a higher approval rating than Biden.

It would be a huge change in fortune for the GOP governor. Four years ago, he narrowly defeated Andrew Gillum, the former mayor of Tallahassee, to become the governor.

Trump support is dropping in his new home state

Trump's support may be waning in the state. The 500 voters were surveyed over the phone in September.

As is his custom, Trump spent the summer at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf course, and Trump Tower in New York City.

In August, the FBI raided Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, and found classified documents that the Department of Justice said Trump wasn't allowed to have. Trump wrote on his social media platform that he had arrived at Mar-a-Lago to check out the scene.

Trump's legal troubles are keeping him in the news, but he also lands national headlines. He directed state resources to fly people from Texas to Martha's Vineyard.

One of Trump's signature issues as president was immigration restrictions. On Saturday, Trump shared an Insider interview on Truth Social with John Thomas, who said that if he ran against Trump, he would lose his political career.

There are a lot of political operatives who think that he will run for the White House. If he were to mount another White House campaign, the conventional wisdom is that he would be the nominee.

The poll found that Trump had an advantage over some Florida voters. He led with voters earning less than $50,000 a year, and with voters who didn't attend college.

According to a poll, Floridians still prefer Trump over the current president, though it's not clear if he could win a national election.

According to a USA Today/Suffolk University poll, Trump would beat Biden in Florida by a wide margin. If Biden were to face off against DeSantis the margins would be even bigger.
