Stephen A.: Federer on the list of all-time greats (1:07)

Stephen A. Smith doesn't agree with Roger's decision to retire. There is a time and a place for this.

Roger said he will only play one doubles match in his final professional match.

The 41-year-old Swiss star decided to retire last week after failing to recover from his most recent knee operation.

At a news conference at London's O2 Arena on Wednesday, the 20-time Grand Slam champion said he hoped to be fit enough to play in a doubles match.

Bjorn Borg, the Europe captain, was asked if it was okay for him to play just one doubles by Roger. It would have to be Friday night.

I'm trying to get ready for the last doubles. We're going to see how it goes. I haven't played in awhile. I hope it works out.

Playing just one doubles match requires a change of the rules of the Laver Cup, a team competition between Europe and the rest of the world in which players usually have to play at least one singles and doubles

He said he would like to play the doubles match with Nadal.

"Of course, it's true," said the tennis player. It could be a unique situation. For as long as we battled, having this respect for one another, our families, coaching teams, for us as well to go through a career we both have had, is a great message to tennis.

I don't know if it will happen, but it would be wonderful.

As recently as Wimbledon, where he was given a standing ovation at an event to mark the 100th anniversary of Centre Court, he wanted to return. The scans on the right knee that he had surgery on last summer were not good, leading to the announcement that he will be stepping away after the Laver Cup.

He said that he was proudest of how he had played at the top of his game.

He said that he was famous for being unpredictable at the beginning of his career. It's quite a shock to become one of the most consistent players of all time. I was able to stay at the top for a long time.

The fans are at the center of everything and I will miss them a lot. I will not be able to interact on the court and off the court anymore.
