Drake Maye apologized Tuesday evening for making a joke about NC State earlier in the day.

While meeting with the media, Maye was asked about the success of his predecessor, Sam Howell. Maye grew up in North Carolina and chose to stay and play for UNC.

I wanted to see Sam being a hometown kid too. "Growing up in Carolina, you're going to be a Carolina fan, whether you want to admit it or not," Maye began, before taking a jab at the school. People who go to State can't get into Carolina.

He said that he didn't want to miss out on his father's family history because he wanted to play for Carolina.

Maye apologized in his apology, which was posted to the social networking site. I said something I shouldn't have said when I was answering the question. It was inappropriate to say it as a joke. I need to do a better job representing our program.

I made a remark today about NC State, and I want to apologize. I was answering a question about playing in-state and said something I shouldn't have. I said it as a joke but it was inappropriate. I feel bad and need to do a better job representing our program and this University.
