The state's largest utility said in a statement that a Megapack battery caught fire at a power storage facility.
According to the utility, they became aware of a fire at the battery storage facility in Moss Landing, which is 25 miles south of Santa Cruz. There is a facility at the site that can store up to 730 megawatt-hours of energy. Clean energy can be stored for use when the sun isn't shining.
The facility was disconnected from the grid as firefighters worked to stop the spread of the fire and provide a safe area for emergency responders. A shelter-in-place advisory was issued by the sheriff's office because of the fire. The office advised nearby residents of an ongoing hazardous materials incident and asked them to shut their windows.
There were no on-side injuries when the issue was detected, according to the statement. The utility said that the incident did not cause electrical outages for customers.
A spokesman for the utility wouldn't say more about the scale of the fire.
The batteries at the storage sites in Moss Landing have caught fire before. There was a fire at the Victorian Big battery storage site last year.
