The public will soon be able to renew their passports online, after two pilot programs took place earlier this year.

The pilot program was launched in February for federal government employees. There is a second pilot program for 25,000 people. There were three pilot programs that ended on September 17

There is a new initiative. The State Department was given the go-ahead to create a safe way to renew passports online after President Biden issued an executive order.

According to the information given at the time the Executive Order was signed, online renewals are expected to cut the time of passport renewals by 1-8 weeks.

The process times have been longer because of the Pandemic. Some passport renewals take 18 weeks to process, according to the New York Times. Delays are also seen with Expedited service.

The State Department only allows those who were able to access the pilot passport renewal program before September 17 to renew online, and all renewals after this date must be done using traditional methods.

Many countries require travelers to have their passports expire at least six months from the return date of their trip, so travelers should always check their passports before booking their trip.
