With the launch of new phones, YouTubers always conduct a series of unscientific durability tests with the hope of showing us how long the phone will last. We thought we'd give a couple of scratch tests for those who are interested.
The results of the annual scratch test on the new iPhones were the same as always. The Ceramic Shield used in the iPhone 12 and 13 is the same one used in the previous two models.
There were more noticeable scratches with the level 7 tool, which is the same result that was seen with the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 12 before that.
The aluminum frame scratched easily, which is no surprise, and the sapphire crystal camera lens scratched at a level 6, which is notable due to the fact that it's usually level 9 on the Mohs hardness scale.
It's difficult to glean useful information from tests like the ones done on the iPhone 14 devices. It can be impressive how much damage the iPhone 14 models can endure before a scratch shows up, but real world conditions vary and the wrong angle or the wrong edge on a tool can cause a scratch in one situation where it wouldn't in another.
The new iPhones use the same glass components as the older ones, but Apple didn't make specific claims about their resilience.
