Horwitz thinks the study will give a better idea of the impact of long covid on Black people. The vice president and director for public policy for amfAR agrees. The first research paper to point out that Black people were contracting covid 19 disproportionately in the US was authored by Millett. He says there are plenty of Black people who can conduct comparative analyses.

ReCOVER is still looking for people to join. The project could finally answer some of the big questions about long covid when the recruitment period is over. Millions of people are being affected by the disease in this third year of the epidemic. Understanding the burden of long covid, both as an illness and as an economic event, is important if government officials or clinicians hope to foster equality in a health-care system that is already stacked against people of color.

Medical mistreatment

More than 93 million covid cases have been reported in the US as of early August. It is thought that vaccines reduce the risk of developing long covid.

Patients recovering from covid tend to fall into one of three buckets. Some are recovering from severe symptoms and organ failure while others have a chronic illness such as diabetes.

Long covid patients are the most difficult to treat. There are serious symptoms, but we can't find anything wrong.

Many people have struggled for a long time. August 11, 2020 is when Fisher's covid symptoms began. She had a new handwriting. Her foot began to shake. She couldn't walk or take care of herself because of the tremors on her body the next day.

Doctors put implants on her spine to calm the tremors in her upper and lower limbs. She can use her own makeup now that she has unlocked her door. She is able to move short distances with the help of a wheeled walker and leg braces. She still can't do her job.

Fisher has insurance, access to quality medical care, and a doctor who advocated for her. She remembers being condescending and disrespectful to some medical staff. She had to go to the ER multiple times before she got better. Black women are more likely to have negative experiences in medical settings and are more likely to die as a result.
