Becky Hammon (right, with Las Vegas Aces owner Mark Davis)

The two women were right there.

Despite being the first NBA team to hire a woman as their head coach, the Portland Trail blazers chose a man who led them to one of the worst seasons in franchise history.

This is misogynistic.

It is a good time to remind people that Portland messed up when the Las Vegas Aces hold their championship parade on The Strip in Sin City. The Trail Blazers only won two of their last 23 games last season, making them the worst team in the league. In January of this year, the team lost Damian Lillard to a season-ending injury, as well as trading away their second-best player in New Orleans. How do you explain to people that you went 27-55 with a new head coach?

This franchise likes to make dumb decisions.

Michael Jordan was taken in the 1984 draft by this team. Don't say "But they already had the excuse of Drexler" You keep it going.

The team that drafted Greg Oden was this one. I don't think you need a big man to win. As time went on, it was obvious that he was a great talent.

Billups was chosen to be their head coach in 2021. Don't say that he has experience in NBA locker rooms. Billups only had one year as an assistant as the only coaching experience on his resume when he was hired as a coach by the Trail blazers.

The drama is still hanging over Billups.

We addressed your question, we appreciate it. As he cut off a reporter's follow-up question to Billups during his introductory press conference, a Trail Blazers employee said "it's been asked and answered so happy to move on to the next question here"

Billups was accused of sexually assault in 1997. Billups took to the mic and said that the situation has impacted every decision he has made. It has shaped me in a lot of different ways. It was reported that Neil Olshey, who was fired in December of 2021 due to reports that he created a toxic work environment within the organization, told reports to "take our word" on the team'sthorough investigation into the matter.

This franchise has a lot of bad decision-making as well as incompetence.

In June of last year, he told the New York Times that he came with a lot of credentials. I have the faith. I have the ability to lead men. The team was the first-team all-stars. Some people are referred to as the "mdpis." I'm okay with that. When Billups was hired, she won an Olympics gold medal as the head coach of Team USA, making her the first Black coach at the highest level of college basketball.

What about Hammon? After being passed over for NBA jobs multiple times, the highest-paid coach in the league got a chance to show people that she was a star after leading the Aces to their first title.

It sucks in the moment to not be picked, but the hard stuff builds something in you that you need down the road. She said after the win that it might not feel like it.

It's not about proving other people wrong for me.

The trail blazers are getting it wrong. For a franchise that has messed up so many times in the past, you would think that they would try to change their fortune by hiring Staley or Hammon after interviewing them. They did what they always do and chose the wrong way.

Dawn Staley will be at the parade with A'ja Wilson, her former player. In a moment when women will be drinking in celebration and being celebrated for their coaching excellence, the powers that be in Portland will probably just be drinking their sorrows away.
