Drop tests and durability tests are standard after any new iPhone release, and the iPhone 14 Pro is no exception, with YouTubers subjecting the device to all manner of tests to see how it fares against competitors.
The drop test video shared by PhoneBuff pits the iPhone 14 Pro Max against the S22 Ultra in order to see which is more durable. Both phones feature front and glass backs, with Apple using Ceramic Shield technology for the front and a dual-ion process for the back, which is something the company has previously said.
There are some design differences, including a flat edge for the iPhone 14 Pro Max and aluminum, but glass is glass, and both phones saw damage in every drop test.
The S22 Ultra had a greater number of cracks and camera lens damage than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but both devices remained functional and the displays were not damaged. Both frames were badly damaged in a corner drop test.
The S22 Ultra saw cracks across the entire display while the iPhone 14 Pro Max had only limited cracking in one corner. The damage to the display made the iPhone 14 Pro Max need a repair. If there's anything that can be learned from these tests, it's that glass is going to break, and no phone manufacturer has been able to develop unbreakable glass.
The glass broke in the drop test for the iPhone 14 Pro. There appeared to be immediate damage to the camera lens with back down drops, which may be because the iPhone 14 Pro models have cameras that protrude further.
Drop tests show why it's a good idea to have AppleCare + for the iPhone 14 models, along with a case, but Apple has improved repairability for the standard iPhone 14 models. The back glass of the iPhone 14 can be opened from the back side, which makes it easier to replace the front glass. The iPhone 14 Pro models are more difficult to repair than the other models.
