More than 100,000 owners in the U.S. and Canada will now have access to the Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta version.

The controversial driver assist system promises to automate certain driving tasks such as assisted steering on highways and city streets, smart vehicle summon, automatic parking and recognizing and reacting to traffic lights and stop signs. The expansion comes at a time when federal and state regulators are coming down on the system after a number of crashes and other potentially life-threatening errors.

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration is currently investigating 16 crashes in which the owners of the electric vehicle may have been using the ADAS. The California Department of Motor Vehicles accusedTesla of false advertising.

A class action lawsuit was filed last week against the company for misleading the public about the functioning of the systems, even though they cannot perform as advertised. Vehicles that run red lights, miss turns and stray into traffic are caused by the ADAS, according to the lawsuit.
