The opening address of the annual high-level gathering in New York City was given by the U.N. Secretary-General.

The 77th United Nations General Assembly, which returned in person this week for the first time in three years, was told by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that the world is in danger.

He said the international community was not ready or willing to tackle the challenges it faced, including climate change, poverty and war.

The ideals of the United Nations charter are in danger.

Europe is grappling with its biggest military conflict since World War II, which has uncovered fissures among major powers on how to deter Russia, support Ukraine and mitigate the consequences of war.

At the U.N. General Assembly, Biden will urge allied nations to give more support to the Ukranian government.

After nearly five months of gradual military build up along its ex-Soviet neighbor's borders, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February.

Russia's war in Ukraine has made a global food crisis worse by disrupting supply chains. More than 6,000 people have been killed in the conflict and Ukrainian cities have been destroyed.

The UN Secretary-General told leaders seated in the General Assembly Hall that "geopolitical divides undermine the work of the Security Council, undermines international law, undermines trust and people's faith in democratic institutions, undermines all forms of international cooperation."

He said that we couldn't go on like this.

Russia's war in Ukraine was one of the things the U.N. chief urged global leaders to address. He wanted leaders to invest in policies that promoted peace.

"Our planet is burning, trust is crumbling, inequalities are exploding, and our society is collapsing."

He said to work as a coalition of the world.
